Some good news...

In an email from Paul Dipre, he confirms that the League "have made significant changes to the requirements for clubs. No longer do we have to advertise bet victor on jerseys or advertising boards."

Paul has further meetings planned to "ensure that there are no other requirements that are unworkable, or not ethical"

So what’s the point on signing a sponsorship deal and then saying that you don’t need to advertise them now. It was a poor decision to sign a sponsor deal with BetVictor. Glad they name will be in your face when at football

An excellent letter. Dipre's focus on safeguarding explains EXACTLY why this sponsorship deal sucks.

Thanks for sharing, John.

We take the money so often with eyes closed and minds closed. To diferentiate between the big adverising powers is just too confusing,so no good going with one and abusing the other

Disagree. Bookies are amongst the very worst. Many businesses make bad money while providing a good service, but bookies exist ONLY to exploit people, making a profit out of their weaknesses, greed or stupidity - they have NO redeeming features.

what's revealing about the betting industry and the approach of Bet Victor is that they don't even pretend that they are not a problem in the community, hence these elaborate "safeguarding" and protection regulations about under 25s and children. the very fact that those things are needed - and are set to give secretaries and officials two years of headaches - should have been ample warming to the Isthmian blazers that this was an inappropriate deal. if nothing else, it makes life difficult for the member clubs. unless Bet Victor offered loads more money to benefit the league, why on earth were they chosen?

Bet Victor have also put in place endless prohibitions on the use of their name and logo in club communications - well, don't worry, Victor, most don't want to be associated with you anyway.

Long live the Ryman.

ps. i may make a Rothmans bedsheet.

The Bet Victor sponsorship covers all leagues in step 3 and 4 so as well as the Isthmian there is the Southern and Northern Premier leagues. There is a blog that covers the North East produced by a former administrator of the Northern League. He raises the question of the failed attempt of the Northern League to be allocated a new step 4 division. He questions whether their existing sponsorship with EBAC would have meant being the odd one out re sponsorship at that level. Was giving the Northern League the extra step 4 division a hindrance to Bet Victors sponsorship. We don’t know the FA’s involvement in the new sponsorship arrangement but it maybe fair to say that the Isthmian League had less influence than we first thought.

False equivalence. Beer mats do not promote drinking. I've not seen a beer mat on TV telling me to go buy a drink down the pub or the offie. A beer mat is not a direct cause of people drinking alcohol.

Aside from that, your point that alcohol companies are bad people like those from betting companies stands.

I wondering where the moral outrage begins and ends. Is money giving to a sport,or individual club, from betting company only wrong if it promotes their product? If say Bet Victor gave Ks a donation but didn't insist any promotion link would that cause moral outrage?

It could be argued that alcohol is as problematical if not more so than gambling. So should clubs not have any revenue streams linked in anyway to the selling of alcohol?

That’s fair enough but I also think the particular problem with online betting companies is that they are heavily marketing something that is available 24/7 and enables people to bet around the clock without restraint.

And the problem with alcohol companies is that they're supposed to restrict their advertising to adults (in practice, 75% of people seeing the advert/promotion should be over 18)

Beer mats supplied to bars from Companies brewing and promoting beer and they of coarse provided free so as to promote their product.
Simples, advertising and promoting which is costly, encourages you to the product.
