Next seasons FA Cup will start at the 4th Qualifying round. The question is who will in the draw with the National league clubs? I suggest in order to get a fair representation of clubs from several leagues that last season's 4th round clubs should be involved.

I'm not proud of linking to this partucular source, but it's the first one I found.

Hi Paddy,

Thanks. So it’s conjecture rather than fact.

Pretty much. Although it would be very FA of the FA to go through with it & cut adrift non league football.

If they did go through with that, I'd like to see the FA Trophy & Vase rearranged for one season to go some way to make amends for clubs club runs... maybe something like:

FA Trophy - remove step 1 clubs, remove all step 2 clubs that are entered in to the FA Cup, add step 5 clubs (or a number of step 5 clubs) to increase the field.

FA Vase - remove step 5 clubs (or just the step 5 clubs in the FA Trophy if they aren't all there), maybe open the doors for anyone lower than the current basement with access to an enclosed floodlight pitch to being the numbers back up.

Increase the prize money for both with an even split of all the prize money the FA save by not having to pay for the previous 5 rounds of preliminary & qualifying rounds of the FA Cup.

This is of course all wishful thinking based on my own utopian ideas, the reality will probably be a fair bit more bleak for grassroots football.

The FA could exclude top flight clubs from the Cup next season, which would allow the greatest number of smaller clubs and reflect the priority each places in the competition.

Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea etc. would hardly notice. They'd complain, of course they would, to keep up appearances.

As much as I'd dearly love to see us play in the FA Cup next season, I just don't see it. Teams at our level would have to enter by September, maybe October at the latest, and I don't see us playing league football by then. And if we don't have a league then no-one really has a squad together to play in the FA Cup.

If Premier League clubs aren't in it because their late finish leads to fixture congestion then the same would presumably have to apply to Championship clubs. You're then just left with a glorified version of the EFL Trophy with some non league teams added, it would be the FA Cup in name only and I don't really see the point of it.

It's not the biggest clubs who have ruined the FA Cup - sure, they sometimes field weakened teams in the early rounds but their squads are so strong they generally get away with it, and they take it seriously as the tournament progresses. The 'big six' have won all but three of the FA Cups since 1989. The problem is the rest of the Premier League and the Championship who don't take it seriously, which is odd when that and the League Cup are their best, perhaps only realistic, chances of ever either winning a trophy or qualifying for Europe.

If it does happen the FA will have to find a way of compensating lower step clubs for the revenue they will be denied. Fairest way I can think of is based on the clubs who competed last season, the prize money that would have been allocated under normal circumstances is shared between all the clubs, do it in stages starting with the fund and clubs that competed in the preliminary rounds, then the fund and clubs for first 3 qualifying rounds.

Either that or x amount of the top finishers from each abandoned 2019-20 table below the National League. Something like this (quantities are just random numbers for the example)

Top 12 from the 2 divisions at nls step 2
Top 8 from the 4 divisions at nls step 3
Top 4 from the 7 divisions at nls step 4
etc.

Although as fair as this way is it means we more than likely don't meet the qualifying criteria... so I prefer your way...

That is too many teams. 64 teams are in the 4th qualifying round. 24 from South + 24 from North and 24 in Conference adds up to 72

but yeah, I should have chosen lower random numbers.

Can't ever imagine everyone agreeing but this is a good suggestion, Paddy. Rewarding the clubs who had promotion / playoffs taken away from them would make sense to me.

I think it goes on back history,it always used to, so if that is still the case our run last season will help mainly in future season if we keep it up.
Maybe like many things next season will be different so to lobby for the club may do no harm at all.
Is there any signs of a start date yet for next season ?

The first league game was due to be on August 8th.

The leagues were due to have a meeting either last week or this week, to decide upon things, so we should know soon if that date will stand.

I would presume if it was the top 64 non league teams it would be National league and the top north/south teams.
