A Scumble speaks

"Even before 2002, your editor occasionally visited Ks games on a spare Saturday, and the venue always seemed quite neat and tidy.

Certainly compared to other places like Gander Green Lane.

But strangely enough, I could never formally warm to the place. Maybe it was because Kingstonian fans were (and still are) a bit odd?"

"As an aside here, a few brief sentences about our relationship with Kingstonian here. It should have worked out, but didn’t.

Perhaps naively on our part, we expected them to make plans to eventually buy back what is after all their home ground.

But for whatever reason, they didn’t. In fact, they seemed to spend more time pointing fingers at us than actual fundraising.

Christ, we even gave them £1m, which some of them charmingly describe as “blood money”.

If that’s the way they still feel, can we have that back? We’ll make better use of it…"

For fans whose club have been given literally everything they've wanted and constantly cheer-leaded by a largely supportive media they remain a really bitter bunch.

Those with a god complex often get aggravated with anyone who doesn't see them in the same light as they see themselves.

I guess they are unhappy that we don't all blindly follow their "we saved Kingstonian" rhetoric. There's still an alarming amount of wombles out there that think Kingstonian Football Club actually financially profited from the sale of Kingsmeadow from Kholsa to Wombles AND that the wombledollars was 100% all generosity & that we played at the ground entirely for free. I guess history is always told from the side of the victors.

"Ks seemed to spend more time pointing fingers at us than actual fundraising"

True, sadly.

But it was niave in the extreme to believe that we could ever afford to buy Kingsmeadow back from them, after their connivance with Begbies Tryanor and Khosla succeeded in inflating the value by over £2m. At half a million, we had a realistic prospect of finding the money - but not at £2.5 million.

Their connivance with Begbies Traynor? I don't think that stitch up is anything we can blame on the Wombles.

Chris Kelly says there was connivance. I believe everything Chris Kelly says.

The timeline is wrong surely? K's were already in the grip of the asset stripper (post BT involvement) when AFCW were looking for somewhere to play, their original idea was T&M but regs on their new ground didn't allow sharing.

I'd heard from other sources that some of the people behind the AFCW movement had already been sounding out potential hosts before any of it happened.

Equally someone I knew in the Tooting area said their key presentation to local authorities on being allowed to move in there couldn't have been worse if they tried. Somewhat of a surprise when you think how well oiled their machine always is, right.

Oh, and to top off, one of their fans, who was involved with our trust at the time, stood up to speak at their meeting when they were debating to buy Kingsmeadow. He kindly said that he spoke on behalf of all K's fans to say we would be happy with their plans ffs.

So the inference is the Wombles were actively in the background aiming to get themselves into Kingsmeadow even before BT completed their deal with the asset stripper?

timeline here: https://shows.acast.com/kingstonian-weaving-in-and-out/episodes/chris-kelly

Kelly's argument is that by April 2002, when Khosla finally gets the ground, in a deal brokered by the administrator, he knows about Wombles, who are officially formed in May 2002 and everyone jumps into bed together.

October 2001: According to the report from eventual administrators Begbies Traynor, “the company received a letter from the Inland Revenue demanding repayment of outstanding payroll liabilities of £179,924 within seven days or a winding-up petition would be presented.” Club entered Administration. Manager Bill Williams was sacked.

October 2001: New manager Steve Sedgley. Protracted attempts at a Company Voluntary Agreement (CVA). Led by Nick Hood of Begbies Traynor. Hood splits club from ground.

March 2002: The Kelly consortium bids to take over. Bids more than Khosla for whole entity (ground and club). But Barclays, the leading creditor, insisted on personal guarantees.

15.4.2002 Rajesh Khosla took over.

25.4.2002 Kelly quit as chief executive. Khosla got the ground. But not the club.

2001/2002 Isthmian Premier season.

5.2002 Scumbles formed.

Season 2002/2003 Ks started season late in September. Scumbles are tenants.

Still doesn't 'prove' that AFCW had anything to do with what BT got up to, or am I missing something?

No proof. the point being made is that the timeline does not, on its own, preclude the possibility. it's often said "oh, well Khosla got the ground when Wombles were not even on the horizon" but he in fact committed and struck his deal at a time when it is likely he knew full well that they were imminent. It's a matter of weeks. Kelly says that Khosla and Wombles' founders had already had exploratory discussions on a future tenancy and it incentivised Khosla to proceed. Such were the relationships that, within 18 months, Wombles were then borrowing money from him to buy the place.

And by implication BT were complicit? I think I'll leave it there.

Well, it's plausible that Begbies Traynor arranged a deal, as was their obligation, attracted Khosla and said "this asset has value. you could get a local tenant. you could even sell it to another local football club in due course. have fun with it."

The lesson is f*** up running a football club and leave yourself open to getting stuffed.
Alas it will continue to be repeated as much of football is a basket case
