A potential extra £1444 for the club though.

(Cue: getting knocked out by a county league side)

I am sure K's will battle on to the 4th rnd qualifier and get to the 1st rnd proper, after all £9000 + is on offer.

Because that's the way the draw works, clubs aren't chosen by name they are picked at random for an early start, 13 this year I believe.

I think it is usually worked out on points per game (or something similar) with the poorest performing step 3 clubs from the previous season having to start in the preliminary round. We have never been in that position since promotion.

However, because last seasons leagues were expunged (and therefore never happened) the FA have done a random draw instead as a one off for this season. Unfortunately we have just drawn a short straw on this occasion!

It's a really bad time to draw a short straw. Games at that stage are going to be a real lottery. If anything, teams from lower levels would have started training earlier and don't have to worry about wages etc to the same effect. This is a real mess when leagues aren't even close to starting.

Surely they should have just been cutting rounds and entrants instead of trying to keep going with a butchered version of a full tournament.

Cutting rounds and teams would be butchering the competition.

At least it would be in some sort of recognisable format. What we've got now is rounds squeezed together, weekends and midweeks, no replays. Don't even know when the leagues will start or possibly stop again.

Arguement to say actually should take the year off for the big cup competitions, to allow them to be played out properly. Also to give clubs and leagues a chance to somehow squeeze a season in.

Ironically, the competitions most likely to get binned off - ie county cups and league cups - would have been the easiest to run, geographically and logistically, if there was time later in the season. They could have gone ahead or been pulled at much shorter notice too.

Things aren't going to be perfect when the season is (at best) starting a month late because of Covid. Losing replays and playing some games midweek seems about the least disruptive thing they could do, not least because they're already steps that have been taken in the latter rounds of the competition. I'd imagine that irrespective of the virus it's the way things will go eventually anyway, long journeys to places like Bedford, Weston and Leamington at three days' notice aren't exactly great for players or fans.
