There was plenty of concern about Leatherhead but the difference was at that point we hadn't given up faith in the board's ability to deliver a permanent ground. Therefore it was (literally, on a bedsheet) that 'Leatherhead is too far for an indefinite period' not that we thought the club was dying as we do now. That faith finally evaporated when the move to Mitcham coincided with the news that the permanent plan was Lovelace, a muddy horse field in a residential area which obviously (to most) had a 0% chance of success.

It helped too that despite the distance to Leatherhead the ground itself was more suited to our size; we enjoyed the town, with a great pub 5 minutes from the ground; and the club ran a free bus to help those who needed it. So there were concerns and people expressed them; we were relieved when the move to Casuals was announced. But nothing felt as desperate as things do now.

I don't see Imber Court being in a residential area as a problem. The problem with residential areas comes when you want to build something new because residents understandably don't want a football club bringing noise, fooodlights, coaches etc right outside their house until 22:00 at night.
