You’re of course correct that where you can buy beer is trivial compared to the treatment of workers and gay rights. And £12 Bud is, to say the least, not everyone’s cup of tea. Nonetheless I think the media were right to highlight this today as it’s a microcosm of how Qatar have said one thing to please people and then done another.

The biggest example was obviously promising a summer tournament with fantasy air con technology, before later throwing the whole football calendar into chaos when that turned out to be bollocks. From improvements to workers’ rights, quality and quantity of fan accommodation, the number of grounds and even the start date there’s been a string of unfulfilled promises.

What confidence can a gay visitor have that ‘everyone is welcome’ when even the availability of beer can be subject to a last minute u turn at the whim of the royal family?
