Groundshare at Cobham
Views: 3372
There's credible rumours of the Board lining up a groundshare at Cobham for next season. I don't know if it's a done deal but, if so, in my opinion it would be even worse than Mitcham. Cobham's ground is a precarious 35 minute walk from the station, there's two trains per hour from Wimbledon and one bus an hour and it's probably not even step 3 graded (not a problem next season, the Board may feel). I hope that the Board can at least confirm Cobham is not being considered. They seem to have finally realised no fans are going to Mitcham - on what basis do they think anyone would trek to Cobham?

If anyone wants to see how difficult/easy it is to get to Cobham's ground, there's an interesting looking fixture this coming Friday evening: Epsom & Ewell (current tenants) v Cobham (landlords) at 7.45pm on 26th Jan.

Cobham would be good for me ….
It is as you say half an hour’s walk from Cobham and Stoke d’Abernon station which is served out of Surbiton.
A 715 bus leaves Kingston at 1.48pm on a Saturday and arrives close to the ground at 2.22pm.
It has a big car park next to the ground.
There is a pub close to the ground.
I think if this is right it might be more about reducing the cost of a groundshare than about whether anyone could go.

1. 715 bus is pay per bus stop so some are looking to pay anything above £10 to get & from Cobham
2. Cobham isn’t in the Oyster card so it’s about £4 single fair from Surbiton( rush hour will be at least double that)
3. This is murder of a football club

The train from Surbiton is only £5 return or the bus £7. Much cheaper than Mitcham, which is £10.10 for a return journey from Surbiton (actually more than I expected/realised and yet another factor putting people off Mitcham).
None of which is to say Cobham isn't a bad place for us to play, as it obviously is. But if we're going to count the cost of public transport against it we need to acknowledge that Mitcham is even worse.

From south of the borough apparently it’s 71 bus, train from Surbiton to Esher and bus from Esher to Cobham so lots of changes just like Tooting but no oyster.
Could be looking at 4 clubs in our division next year nearer to Kingston than us if Casuals stay up and both Raynes Park and Leatherhead stay down

Wow, that puts things MASSIVELY into perspective as we try to gain new supporters to replace the ones we've lost recently.

That sentence seems to sum up everything about the Directors and what they think of the supporters.

Are you feeling Ok Count? This is a horrendous idea.
It would be good for you would it? That’s ok then.
For someone who’s hardly come to a game in the last 10 years you seem to have an awful lot of opinions.
You either want to be part of the collective movement of Ks fans or you don’t.

Can you point me towards where I said it was a good idea?
It would be geographically much closer to me so I said that.
But I did not realise I said it was a good idea, just as last night when I asked about ndas I did not praise the club yet you said I was!
I was merely expanding on transport options and I never said it as a good idea.

Well count you stating it being good for you implies it’s a good idea.
Yeah we need ideas but we also need people to take the lead. Are you going to get involved and help or just be a consultant on the side lines?

Alas beggars cannot be choosers. The board has heard loud and clear the loud cries from fans about Mitcham and is clearly looking for an alternative - but there is no much choice.
Cobham is similar to Leatherhead and I don’t recollect the cries of indignation about the latter. As it happens Cobham have a 3G pitch I believe which would be far better than the rain soaked mud bath at Leatherhead.
I suspect Cobham is actually a little closer geographically to Kingston tban Leatherhead. Its main default is that it is a long walk of half an hour from the station.
Of course it would be best if we returned to Kingston. Molesey? I think they are now at step six and their ground was rudimentary to say the least. I would like Imber Court but it is in a residential area and a busily used facility already

There was plenty of concern about Leatherhead but the difference was at that point we hadn't given up faith in the board's ability to deliver a permanent ground. Therefore it was (literally, on a bedsheet) that 'Leatherhead is too far for an indefinite period' not that we thought the club was dying as we do now. That faith finally evaporated when the move to Mitcham coincided with the news that the permanent plan was Lovelace, a muddy horse field in a residential area which obviously (to most) had a 0% chance of success.
It helped too that despite the distance to Leatherhead the ground itself was more suited to our size; we enjoyed the town, with a great pub 5 minutes from the ground; and the club ran a free bus to help those who needed it. So there were concerns and people expressed them; we were relieved when the move to Casuals was announced. But nothing felt as desperate as things do now.
I don't see Imber Court being in a residential area as a problem. The problem with residential areas comes when you want to build something new because residents understandably don't want a football club bringing noise, fooodlights, coaches etc right outside their house until 22:00 at night.

I'd say Leatherhead is way better from a public transport perspective. The 465 is a London bus so is £1.75 and runs late midweek.
The 715 is a Surrey bus so would be more expensive £7? and will have stopped running before full time midweek.

'If' this is true, then the board are alteady expecting and consigning its own club (our club) to be playing at the level below next season.
This is slightly at odds to Simon Lanes 'hopeful' comments and efforts to save us from the drop again. Unless we can achieve back to back wins vs Concord in the next 7 days and overcome Cheshunt, Margate and Haringey at 'home', then its game over for us anyway. Apparently, Cobham have made significant improvements to their ground, but I don't think it is graded for our current level. The thing I want to see most, is our team going through the gears, not through the motions with almost two and
a half months of play left to come. Now he's at a loose end, maybe the board might bring in 'Dowse' to give Simon a 'hand' until the end of the season. That would stir things up a bit!

If we did somehow stay up and it actually has a step 3 grading, it would also almost certainly mean a move to the Southern League. Ironic considering the fuss the board and their supporters made about this when justifying Mitcham.
But more likely we'll be relegated and this at least would guarantee us a place in the local South Central division rather than risking long trips to Kent if we stay in Mitcham.
It's a bit better for car drivers and might well be a nicer environment for our small fanbase (I haven't been since it was done up).
But come on, those public transport options are ridiculous, at the very least it would need a supporters bus again for those who don't drive. And it's hard to see how life would be much better there for us than it is at present. If this is the best the board can do the club really is dying.

Yep, we know. But we promised the Chairman that we'd let him make the announcement first.

I can't imagine Dowse wanting to come back with a certain imbecile on the board. Remember the Kingsmeadow days when he used to verbally abuse him as he walked off the pitch. One of our greatest managers and he thought he knew better. Now we have this clown calling the shots with a seemingly tiny shareholding in the club!

Fair point. I wasn't suggesting 'undermining' our current coach
by mentioning Dowse, by the way. They both have different styles and have both been in the game a very long time.
It was just an interesting thought.
