Twitter-gate

By Ks Supporters Club (K Supporters Club)18/5 17:59Sat May 18 17:59:49 2024

The Supporters Club has received confirmation from the Chairman that the Club accepts that neither of the two individuals blocked from the Club's X (Twitter) posted anything threatening or intimidating, or sent intimidating private messages. The Club accepts that there is no need for the two individuals to be blocked on a permanent basis, and the blocks will be lifted in due course.

The Supporters Club wishes to remind supporters that it is against FA rules to post comments on club or league websites and/or social networking sites that are or maybe perceived as: offensive, insulting, abusive, threatening, racist, discriminatory, or any other reference that may cause offense or harm to others.

It would appear that some people have made abusive phone calls to Simon Bangs, the Club's Communications Officer, and sent abusive Direct Messages (these have come from X accounts where the author cannot be identified).
Simon has had to change his number and has reported the matter to the police. Clearly, this needs to stop.

Simon has asked me to pass on his grateful thanks to the Supporters Club for the message you put out there urging that the sending of abusive calls and messages be ceased. Simon has though nonetheless decided not to take up the role of the Club's Communications Officer due to the harassment he received and asked me to pass on this information on to the Forum.

So I take it despite doing absolutely nothing wrong, and being patient and civil throughout, I don’t get an apology from Simon for him repeatedly libelling me publicly to 11,000 people?

There was one statement of which you complained (now deleted ) and this was from the football club - not an individual. If you remain concerned you should express this concern to the Kingstonian FC. People should not be trying to target an individual with harassment that in some cases is bordering on criminality . I am sure that is not your doing but as you have seen the Supporters Club have urged that this cease.

Stop conflating whether or not I’m owed an apology with this!

Obviously, it is dreadful that Simon was exposed to harassment in the brief period he was undertaking his role. That is terrible and I condemn it wholeheartedly.

But equally, it is really poor that he (and it was he, not “the club” or Yioryos is someone else) repeatedly doubled down on messages insinuating that I had abused him. Those messages have been deleted but I haven’t had the apology I’m clearly due.

Both these things are separately true. Please stop conflating them as a straw man argument.

The SC, quite rightly, acted days ago to call out the abuse but this is now deflecting from the separate issue of Alastair being owed an apology. Whether that should come from 'the club' as an entity, or an individual, depends on who signed off what but one way or another he's owed an apology.

The SC's post four days ago shows that the Chairman is well aware of the issue. There should be no need for Alastair to jump through any other hoops.

I think part of the problem is that "the football club" (ie the @KingstonianFC account) very quickly started posting in the first person, thus making it clear that an individual was offering their own personal view from the club account. Just naivety I'm sure, but doing that absolutely blurred the lines between the entity of the club and the person posting on its behalf.

My understanding is that complaints should be submitted directly to the Club Chairman and I do agree that as people have continuing concerns that they should take them up with Kingstonian FC.

I wonder if I can check whether you agree with IrishKs (who is otherwise very critical of the Club actions)

However, I am yet to see any evidence to support this, despite asking you several times.

Criticism or merely being unpleasant is not abuse.

Yes, and as a supporters club member of many years, I was pleased to see that being reaffirmed.

I don’t think it is possible for the information reported to the police to be shared. I do though realise that this means you’re unable to comment on the detail of it.

Separate to allegations of harassment against individuals, the Club's recent comms performance has been absolutely wild - misleading accusations to its 11k followers and wholly unprofessional exchanges on Twitter, followed by a complete lack of accountability.

Once again though, just like the AFC money, we're told to move forward, don't look back, ask no questions, and of course never apologise or take responsibility.

This fish is rotten from the head down.

As can be seen from earlier posts, the Supporters Club had approached the Football Club to resolve concerns about this matter and have helped facilitate a resolution. The original posts and news items have now been deleted and a replacement statement will be prepared shortly. The need for issuing apologies has been raised and is receiving active consideration.
The Football Club is, I understand, also going to highlight the importance of adherence in future to the FA Guidelines to which the Supporters Club referred and will prepare local guidance based on these.

Thank you. I’m glad that the original Twitter posts and the news items have been deleted. That closes this really silly matter.

If there needs to be a discussion over an apology, then clearly any apology won’t be genuine, so I can’t say I’ll now now be bothered if I get one or not. It’s like with kids: if they’re made to apologise and do it in a surly way, they’re obviously not actually sorry at all. But we are dealing with adults here, so I have to say I find it a bit depressing really.

This is absolutely outrageous.

This post - which has not been deleted - states that followers who have "repeatedly" used "threatening language, swearing or abuse of our volunteers and staff" have been blocked.

As I understand it, 2 followers have been blocked.

I know for sure that one of them (@kingstonroadend) didn't do anything repeatedly, didn't use threatening language, possibly swore once, but did not abuse volunteers and staff. And the statement above confirms that.

The fact that this incorrect insinuation remains online, and has not been retracted or apologised for, is a complete disgrace. The post needs to be deleted and a public apology offered to the two users.

Furthermore, if the blocking was done without the consent of the board, whoever did it should be removed from their post, and the board should put in arrangements to ensure that they can properly oversee public statements made on behalf of their club. If the board was involved then they too should offer an apology.

Sack the board.
