Live stream

Just watched the video of Farnham v Hayes and Yeading from Wednesday. The commentator, during live streaming of the game, said the crowd was 350 (think it was actually given as 334), well down on their average, with nearly 1,000 watching online. Wonder how many of those watching online would have gone if the game wasn't live streamed?

their midweek crowds are always around 300. there's a massive drop-off from weekends because their saturday thing is "dulwich good-times bbq and beer blah". their owner has spoken about this a lot and how to close the differential.

So the real question is: how many of the 1000 watching online therefore maintain an interest in Farnham and feel included and attend the next match in person?

Quite a few, i'd bet.

How many people drift away from K's because the club is awful at saying "hey, look at us!"

Loads.

I haven't heard the owner speak before about the differential, it did seem to me to be a huge difference between midweek and Saturday game crowds. Why would so many watch a midweek live stream but not attend? Has the Farnham owner suggested why this might be? Do they live stream any of their Saturday matches?

It's a fair question.

But I think the more important statistic is that, since 2017, their average attendance has grown from 57 to 648.

Is it the fact that they have spent a lot of money recently, and are winning games, hence attracting the usual glory hunters/increased gates, or that simply having a well run club has increased the attendances anyway? I did think the drop off for the midweek game was huge compared to most other clubs, whatever their average crowds are.

Does winning alone = good crowds? Not on the evidence of K's this season. Having a competently run club and local community buy-in certainly helps in enabling good crowds though.

Honestly, when it comes to these live streams I really don't know how much they compete with in-person attendance.

Watching a non-league game off a single camera is a nice service to have, but it doesn't really compare to the social experience of going to a game. It's a bit like meeting your mates in the pub v face-timing them with cans in the house.

And what do the Views account for? People actively watching the game or who have clicked the link and maybe tuned out after 30 seconds? I'm pretty skeptical.

As someone who was never going to be in Raynes Park on Wednesday though thanks to Guernsey for this week's stream though - it was v much appreciated!

Indeed. In the last 7 days alone, the S Club website has been accessed by people in the US, France, Sweden, Poland, Belgium & Australia.

I hope you enjoy this afternoon's commentary in California! https://hanworthvilla.mixlr.com/events/3993864

The Ks board have spent a lot of money over the past 8 years that they didn’t need to spend. Around £700k of money we were continually told was ring-fenced for a ground.

‘An unforgivable betrayal’ is the best quote that has described this!

Looks like long-term, sustainable growth to me. Perhaps we'd be better copying their methods than questioning their success.

I wasn't aware anyone was questioning their success? Certainly not me, good luck to them, I just found it strange that they had such a big drop off for midweek crowds.

Yeah but no but, that's fair.

Perhaps the better question is how have Farnham (et al) built online followings so much larger than their IRL attendances. (Rather than why is their midweek online following so much lower than their Saturday gates.)

Search Google for this, and there's a plethora of articles. A good summary is "The effect of social media on the publicity of non-league football represents a major change in the way grassroots football is managed and interacted with. The digital revolution has brought more football coverage that allows clubs to tell their stories, mobilise communities, and build viable businesses."

Sadly, the Directors of Kingstonian FC don't seem to understand this. And they've alienated the many highly-skilled Ks supporters/volunteers who could help with this.

As Filipo says, an alternative IS possible.
